Textbooks Can Often Prove To Offer Only A Limited Amount Of Informatio

Textbooks can often prove to offer only a limited amount of information. Space and time constraints place the author(s) of these textbooks in a sticky situation. They must get the general concept through without taking up to much space. However, this can sometimes push out relevant material that van help to support the general concept. The chapter suggests that young adult literature can help to make up for this missing piece of the puzzle. Outside literary readings, separate from the text yet connected through a general theme, can be useful in making the concept more palatable, comprehensible, and memorable. As a history teacher, historical fiction can be a major asset in helping me to help the students better understand the content area. It helps the student to appreciate the importance of the content through the eyes of actual human beings. It brings what they have learned in their text down to a humanistic level that they can better understand. By making clear the ideas and themes that directly relate to the textbook, students will be better able to put that information into context.

Sweet essays

Sweet essays I chose the book Hard Love by Ellen Wittlinger because Ive always heard my friend Chanel always saying something about it; like how good it was and how everyone seemed to be asking her if they should read it or not. So, it finally became my turn to ask her. And I decided to ask Chanel because I kept asking Lexie, and I thought it was time for her to take a break from recommending me books. The book is excellent so far, and Im glad Im reading it because this girl is giving this guy some writing tips, similar to the ones Mr. K is teaching us in class. And since we do have 5 writing pieces due this term, its like helping me out with my own writing. And you can never get enough help. But whats even better, is that there are actually pieces from these zing magazines in the book, giving you different types of writing. One I really liked was that there werent really any periods, just once in a while, and it was really caught my attention because you kind of had to guess where the periods went and it would confuse you. It was actually kind of fun! In the book, the guys life is practically falling apart; his moms getting married to some fifty-year old who still lives with his mom, and the guys mom just doesnt seem to want to be with him or even near him. But thats only half of it. Him and his dad dont even talk. And when they do, his father doesnt event think he can handle it, when really hes always been able to handle it. Just imagine, you meaning nothing to your parents except a brat that they have to support, as if you were a mistake. You would feel so alone, so lost, as if you had nothing to live for and you would do anything just to be loved again. You beg that you could have the one special moment again, where you felt that you were part of the family again and you were loved. So I think that the theme is letting it slip. Many kids, especially ...

What is the nature of human existence from a Heideggerian perspective, Essay

What is the nature of human existence from a Heideggerian perspective, and what relevance may this have to psychotherapy - Essay Example This paper will examine the application of existential philosophy to psychotherapy, particularly focusing on Heidegger’s approach, though other existentialists will be touched upon in order to form a more general overview of Heidegger’s theory as it stands alone and in comparison to other similar theories. Heidegger’s concept of being and his fundamental issue of where being begins will be explored, as well as his notion of dasein and anxiety in application to psychotherapy. It will then be evaluated in order assess its effectiveness and contributions to psychotherapy both actual and potential. It will ultimately argued that Heidegger’s contributions to psychotherapy have the potential to be extremely useful, though they have as of yet struggled to have any major influences on psychotherapy practice. While this is due to the seemingly negative lack of structure when applying existentialism and philosophy in general to psychotherapy, it is possible that aft er some time the philosophical approach to psychotherapy can gradually develop into a methodical, structured practice. Heidegger was greatly influenced by philosophers such as Jaspers (1964) and laid the ground for later philosophers such as Binswanger (1963). The central theme of all was the shift from psychiatry to philosophy so that human problems and paradoxes could be better understood. This was of course initially received as an almost impossible task. A number of philosophers have applied existentialism to psychotherapy in several different forms and manners (Frankl, 1967; Szasz, 1965), and the stubbornness with which theories have been proposed suggests that future approaches to psychotherapy will increasingly incorporate existential themes. Heidegger’s existential philosophy concentrates on the supra and inter personal dimensions through its attempts to discover and analyse

Freedom of Religion Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words - 1

Freedom of Religion - Essay Example The research paper investigates the stand of the judicial system of the US and the federal government in the interpretation of the free exercise clause when confronted with different aspects of the freedom of religion as enshrined in the US Constitution. The Free exercise clause explicitly prohibits the US government from interfering with the religious choice of each individual. The Clause also bars the US government from invading various religious practices that do not pose security threats to the country. The free exercise clause forbids the US government from forceful recruitment of citizens into particular fields believed to contradict individuals’ religious standing. The clause further allows individuals to make their own decisions and choices regarding the type of religions in which they desire to belong. The Supreme Court of the US applied the principles of the free exercise clause to grant the Amish community the request of terminating the education of their children a t the eighth grade of education. The Amish in their status felt satisfied and tended to derecognize the needs for furthering the education of their children. In this case, the Amish community was granted request on the basis of their religion, which deemed it unfair for states to sponsor their children’s education while they were economically stable. The Free Exercise Clause also accredits parents the right to choose and decide on the appropriate schools that comply with their individual religious beliefs.

Operations and supply chain management Research Paper

Operations and supply chain management - Research Paper Example In a bank, personnel use systems and computers to manage the flow of money among the respective accounts along with providing customers efficient service through statements and further banking facilities. Their operations mostly are concerned with the rolls and rolls of paper apart from exporting flat screen television and certain other items. The main concept in this regard is the idea incorporated by the authority of importing low cost raw materials of paper from the land of China and exporting them to rest of the world. Georgia Ports Authority is a strategic partnership with Resolute Forest Products, formerly known as Abitibi Bowater Inc., which is a pulp and paper manufacturer headquartered in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Ships of Georgia Ports Authority are filled with the large paper containers along with being filled with televisions and computers (Lion Television, â€Å"Episode 4: Made in the USA†). It is generally known that paper is generated by low value raw materials. Georgia Ports Authority’s unique strategy to process them to finished goods along with exporting them to the rest of the globe as well as the relentless 24*7 operations can be stated as among the m ost significant concepts in the area of OSM. CONCEPT/IDEA/REVELEATION 2 Second most significant idea or concepts of OSM has been introduced by one of the auto manufacturing leader Volkswagen. It has been creating high value manufactured offerings through its game based training programs. Human Resources Management: Business Profiles

Human Resources Management: Business Profiles Executive Summary Uniquely Neish Shoetique is a ladys only shoe store located in Portmore St Catherine Jamaica owned and operated by Athena Brown in partnership with Neisha Thompson and Tiffany Palmer. Uniquely Neish Shoetique is a legal business in Jamaica, so they don’t have to worry about getting put out of business due to no license. Portmore needs an upscale lady’s shoe store because the other stores have an inadequate selection. Now, a lady who needs a unique special kind of shoes often must travel over to Portmore to find what suits them. Uniquely Neish Shoetique will have a selection of different styles of shoes and these include Loafers, Sandals, working class shoes, Pumps etc; all these are unique, different from the rest and its designer branded. The sizes can be said to be cost prohibitive due to the restocking of all different styles. Uniquely Neish Shoetique has a very unique business model and what this does’s is that; it allows a wide selection at a cost of restocking one size per style. They have a special relationship with the wholesaler which means, Uniquely Neish can receive the ordered sizes for customers in two days or they can do the overnight rush shipping at an additional cost. Being that Uniquely Neish Shoetique is a small business it has over 100 clients which is good for a start knowing that they only started 4 years ago. The marketing plans is not so much effective but if it was they can gain more than enough clients that will bring other people along through word of mouth; for example effective advertising, targeting the right people etc. Uniquely Neish Shoetique is not so much Technology inclined as they are still fairly small so they only use the basic Technology they know how to use. Introduction The purpose of this research was to create two companies and do a brief overview of each in which we would have given the two companies a legal names, create a business profile and to also state whether or not both companies are Limited Liability Company or a partnership company. In this research readers will notice what type of services offered by both companies, what makes us stand out from the rest, what makes us unique and where we are located, how much employees do we have including management and the expected vision, mission, goals and objectives of the two businesses. This assignment was to also answer the assignment questions and link it to the second business. Now Rosetta English Consultant Firm is based overseas in the UK it is a limited liability Company and what we do is that, we help small businesses to create efficient plan to meet their goals and to briefly look at existing and start-up businesses. We are hired by a small group of investors who wants to purchase a small business enterprise and I am a senior manager in Rosetta Consulting Firm who will do the necessary assessment of the performance and nature of the small business as well as to provide recommendations to best improve the business. The company I choose was Uniquely Neish Shoetique Located at 6 Retirement Road, Cross Roads, Kingston 10 they are Offer wide rages of unique styles in shoes for ladies only such as sandals, loafer and dressy shoes. These are costly but it’s all about the quality of the product they are selling as well as the brands. The number of staff in this business is 10 inclusive of owner and managers. It is a partnership company with Athena as the CEO who is the leader and decision maker, Neisha and Christina works as Human Resources Managers, Samantha is the Line Manager, Tiffany deals with Marketing and Kneka is responsible for Finance aspect of the business and a total of five employees. These six employees report to HRM and every other top level management reports to the CEO. The limitations of this research would be that I had problems with my laptop and the information. Background Rosetta English Consulting Firm has been in business for the past 12 years. Our specialism is in helping Small Businesses to improve the performance and potential of the business enterprise. Our business is well known in Birmingham because that’s where our business first started in 2001 and where we still are today. We have 15 people on staff right now but we intend to recruit more employees as our business grows over a 5 year period. We get hired by small groups of investors (private partners) to find a business for them to aquire. It is for me the senior manager consultant to seek out a business and do some checks on it The Business I choose to aquire is Uniquely Neish Shoetique and its a Partnership Business located in Portmore inside Portmore mall. They don’t own anywhere for themselves, it’s just a rented studio for the time until they can grow. Uniquely Neish Shoetique is all about unique designer shoes for ladys and it’s owned and operated by Athena Brown. What makes us different is our name which spells unique in everything we do or choose to do. It is a kind of upscale lady’s store that sells products like Loafers, Sandals of all different design and styles, good quality work shoes, canvas etc. they do night rush orders for at a additional cost for all those who want the shoe ASAP. We are not large in numbers but we are working with what we have now until we can recruit some more employees to fill new positions as we grow. Objectives To understand the difference between Personnel Management and Human Resources Management To understand how to recruit employees To determine and understand how to reward employees in order to motivate and keep them To analyze the mechanism for cessation of employment Methodology This information was collected from online websites. I was there going through the questions for term paper 1 and started to think ok where should I start looking? I do not have any text books and neither am I near any library to get information for these questions. Anyways, after a while I stated to search for notes online from our school page and ended up finding the questions that had web links attached to them and that’s where I got some ideas and information from. There was not much information well detailed on these pages to do quote on quote so I tried to use my own words as best as I could because I wanted to avoid the plagiarism and not use too much of peoples words. At first I was only answering the questions and not linking it to the small business but then I had to go back and read over and ensure that’s it connecting to the small business. Due to Limited Information I somehow used my own initiative to complete the rest of the assignment. The use of course syllabus was used as a guide to writing my objectives and goals. We had gotten a another piece of paper that I used to guide in creating my companies, writing what its products are, to create a vision, goals, objectives and mission for both companies. The Guideline paper also helped me to write my introduction as to what is to be written in it and the word limit. Distinguish between Personnel Management and Human Resource Management It was said that Personnel Management and Human Resource Management deals with the managing of people within the organizations, which means it doesn’t have much of a difference between the two. Because Uniquely Neish Shoetique is just a small business and doesn’t have much on management team they do have a line Manager that deals with the welfare and satisfaction of its workers. Personnel management was said to be a more back in the days approach to people management and it is an everyday function. It focuses on increase in production within the organizations, workers satisfaction, and welfare of workers. Whereas HRM deals with a more now a day’s approach of management and is a strategic function. It deals with motivation of employees, development and acquisition. Personnel Management is centralized which means decisions are done only by top management as it only involve personnel management. HRM in Uniquely Neish Shoetique is concerned with workers on every level of the business. Decisions are made once employees are involved they are more decentralized everyone inside Uniquely Neish Shoetique is involved in the decision making process; no one is left out. When it comes on to Personnel Management in Uniquely Neish Shoetique it offers less training and development opportunities for employees whilst our HRM offers training and opportunity for development. Our HRM ensure that employees are given enough training that has to do with dealing with customers, using the cash register, adding clients to our client’s lists and how to find the right shoes and also take note of stocks that we are out off. Those were some of the clear differences between the Uniquely Neish Shoetique Personnel Management and Human Resources Management. As stated before there’s not much difference but there’s a clear distinct difference between the two. One has more activities (HRM) associated with it while the other has less (PM). Assess the function of the human resource Management in contributing to organizational purposes Human Resources Management is said to be a function within an organization/business that is concerned with recruiting and managing people in the organization. Human Resources Management comes with a lot of functions as well as activities that need to be performed. The function of HRM includes a few: Recruitment, Motivation, Planning and Growth, and Implementing HR policy. Recruiting: Plays a huge part in Uniquely Neish Shoetique because it takes up a large part of the organization priorities. According to (Buzzle. 2014) recruiting begins with making the company’s presence felt in the job market by advertizing vacancies, participating in job fairs, or just going around in circuit at universities. Recruitment can be done both internally and externally. Internally is where workers within the organization can apply for the post and externally are those outside the organization. Our HRM has to go through a huge amount of applicants is a big responsibility where they must ensure that they recruit the right candidates suitable for sales representative job positions. After that task is finish they have to schedule interviews to meet with the chosen applicants to see what they are all about, their qualifications, and individual traits and sometimes does a thorough background check. Motivation: Uniquely Neish Shoetique is a ladies shoe store and we are not that much a big business but we ensure that we use monetary things to motivate our employees to come to work every day with urge to meet, greet new people and interact with them no matter how hard they can be sometimes. Motivation can come in the forms of monetary or non- monetary but in most cases workers motivation is monetary. Monetary means having to do with money, cash etc. If employees are not performing up to standard its HR responsible to do a performance check as well as to create a reward system for them to be motivated. These include things such as Salary Increase, Bonuses, award, paid vacations and flexible working hours. HRM should try to keep a bond between employees and the organizations at the same time and everything will be great within the organization. Planning and Growth: Planning and Growth will take place when there’s less conflict of interest happening in our store. HR policy should be in tandem with the business policy of Uniquely Neish Shoetique. Once all the employees and bigger heads in this shoetique are working together it will be a contribution to the success of this Business. Implementing HR Policies: HR policy is concerned with the safety and welfare of the employees. This can be checking for safety work clothes for the job, checking of equipments and work areas on an intermittent basis. Uniquely Neish Shoetique ensures that areas within the business are safe for employees as well as to ensure that the building is safe for everyday use. As a shoetique all for ladies there is no need for a man to be working there unless he has a passion for ladies things; so its expected that workers may become pregnant and when they are near to their due date we ensure that we give them, things such as maternity leave, insurance schemes, welfare funds, and recreational activities that are implemented for the welfare of employees. Evaluate the role and responsibilities of line managers in human resource management According to (Cite HR. 2012) front line managers are managers who are responsible for a work group to a higher level of management. Uniquely Neish Shoetique HRM responsibilities are as follows: Management of Employees Managing operational costs Checking Quality Dealing with clients Measuring operational Performance Line managers may sometimes assist in the recruiting and selection process as they work alongside HR. Some activities that were done by HR are done by Line Managers now these include coaching, grievances and discipline and performance appraisal. Roles of Line Managers Due to research done by Bath University they discovered that Line Managers play a key role in the implementing of HR policy’s simply because they have a positive relationship with front line managers that’s causes workers to be more committed to what they do, and they will always be high levels of satisfaction with jobs. Line manager’s roles is designed by HR but not carried out by HR. This role includes things like performance appraisal, Training, Coaching, guidance, communication and involvement, being open with employees and recognizing the contribution of employees. Front Line Managers need to build a strong relationship with employee’s in order to have high levels of job satisfaction as well as in order for them to carry out these roles and responsibilities they need to know how to reason with employees, be fair in all aspects of matters, be good listeners, ask questions if need to and deal with problems in a efficient manner. Analyze the impact of the legal and regulatory framework on human resource management Every business or organizations faces legal and regulatory frame work on Human Resources Management. Uniquely Neish Shoetique has to deal with these external factors or impacts. These External factors can be the Government, Economy, Technology and Demographics. HRM has to put these external factors into consideration into their strategy because these are factors that take places on a daily basis. External Factors Government: The government is the ones responsible for passing Legislations and Laws that must be adhered to Uniquely Neish Shoetique HRM tries their best to adhere to laws and legislation because they do not want to be fined or face the risk of being shut down. HR is constantly under pressure to stay in line with laws and legislations because these affect the everyday process of the HR department. Economy: Uniquely Neish Shoetique is highly aware of the current state of the economy. As a small business they had put into place strategies, to deal with sudden problems of the economy because it is one of the biggest external influences that may affect a business. They have to be aware of what’s happening out there in the world to be prepared for days to come and have something planned for economic downturn. State of the economy can cause Uniquely Neish Shoetique and any other businesses to not hire anyone at all so they have to be prepared for situations like these to combat them. Technology: According to (Erick Friedman. 2013.) technology is considered as an external factor because once new technology is being introduced the HR department can start thinking of how to downsize and new ways to save. Due to the high increase of technology today there’s ways to do everything including cutting back and saving. Uniquely Neish Shoetique just started out, so need to know and understand how to cut back and save. Work Force Demographics: Nowadays employees are different from those of back then employees. Retired persons are seen as old generation type of workers and the new generation is the current candidates so HR must create environment that will attract the new candidates as times goes by. New generation candidates are more modern so they know what to expect from a job such as benefits, compensations etc. So it’s for HR to provide these schemes for new candidates so that they are satisfied with their jobs. There are a lot of businesses out there that disregards these external factors regardless of what it can do to their businesses but in order for their business to be long-term they must follow and pay attention to these external factors. Recommendations I would recommend that for this small business to survive selling unique designer ladies shoes they need to have some form of advertising going on out there such as, social media pages to do advertising about the business and to announce sales, on radio television newspapers etc. Another recommendation could be to have online stores where ladies can stay from their home or offices at work and view the different styles or designs of shoes and to see whenever there’s a sale where there’s going to be a sale and what time the sale will take place. They could also try placing fliers in supermarkets, salons, nail technicians shop etc. They may want to come up with ideas to get the shoes across to persons. For example; Island Delivery .The location of the store is in Portmore and even though Portmore is like a city of its own, a lot of people do not like going to Portmore or they might not be close to Portmore but needs a pair of those unique designer shoes, so they need some way of getting the shoes to clients. Another recommendation is that they should try little kids girl designer shoes as well because mothers don’t mind buying a pair of unique shoes for their daughter’s. Also try to build more client base list of customers who frequently shops there and to get more people onboard with those that are available in order to stay in the market. Need to be sure of ways to improve income coming into the business. Conclusion In conclusion to this research Rosetta Consultant Firm is a good firm that focuses on helping small business to develop plans and to come up with solutions to solve problems. That’s why they had put me the senior manager on the task to aquire a small business for the private investors. I Chose Uniquely Neish Shoetique simple because I realize they have the potential to go further to expand into something more profitable than this. I got to understand pretty much all the business and the fact that they are a small business there would not be much top level management. The few that’s their may have to do two different jobs for now until they have grown to employ persons to fill positions that needs to be filled to take some of the load off anyone of the top management who ends up doing more than one job posts. HRM is doing a great job right now, handling the external environmental forces that can affect Uniquely Neish Shoetique as well as the recruiting and welfare of their employees. I would definitely consider this small business Uniquely Neish Shoetique a fit business to aquire. There are some areas where things are not clear but with proper guidance, and inputs can lead to a profitable leading Shoetique. Reference Buzzle. 2014. Functions of Human Resource Management. The Humanization of Modern-Day Film Vampires Essay -- Movies

The Humanization of Modern-Day Film Vampires His thirsts have not changed. He craves the taste of blood, the warm, life-sustaining liquid that flows so gently from the necks of his victims into his own foul mouth. He continues to hunt in the night, cursed forever from the purity of sunlight, and his immortal body still remains ageless, untouched by the rugged sands of time and trauma. Yet somehow the vampire is different than he once was. He is richer, more human in color. His clothes are no longer binding and elaborate as the capes and suits of old; he often opts for simple denim or leather pants and coats. In fact, the modern vampire can often be mistaken for any other man or woman out for a midnight stroll. These observations all show evidence of the humanization of vampires in pop culture, an evolution from the soulless, purely evil animals they once were to merely darker versions of man. As humans struggle to control their own inner desires under the burden of society, increasingly protagonist vampires question and fi ght to suppress their own dark thirsts. It is this denial of nature unknown to the strictly evil vampires of old that identifies the modern-day film vampires more closely with their human counterparts today. Vampires, in retrospect, weren’t always the socially in-tune creatures that they are today. For what reasons did these changes occur? According to social critic I.C. Jarvie, â€Å"if we look again at the movie past . . . we find that the critical posture, the portrayal of society, has long been an important subtradition of the American cinema† (Social Criticism xiii). Thus, if we refer back to some of the earliest vampire films, we might receive some clues about the nature of the society that bir... ...to pursue it. As Benjamin Hoff remarks in the Tao of Pooh, â€Å"when you know and respect your own Inner Nature, you know where you belong† (41). Perhaps, in modeling what were once seen as beasts after us, we are learning to accept rather than shun our own primitive natures. Our place in the world is as creatures that are human. Carphone warehouse Essay

Introduction Carphone warehouse is a mobile phone retailer founded in 1989 in an era when phones were too bulky, hence being referred to as carphones. It’s based in UK and has over 1700 stores across Europe. Outside the United Kingdom and Ireland, the company carries on its business under the name phone house. Carphone warehouse did its initial public offering at the main market of the London stock exchange (Great Britain et. al, 2011). There has been tremendous growth in the business and this has resulted to Carphone opening many branches at home and also in Western Europe. Ways of improving operations at Carphone warehouse In its quest to provide modern services to its customers and the staffs in general, carphone warehouse has embarked on going back to the drawing board to ensure they have many of the latest mobile technologies. The strategy by this company to utilize smart technology in its stores has attracted a lot of attention and many shoppers are flocking their shops. The younger generation is so much obsessed with smart technology; the large workforce of carphone is mainly the younger generation. This strategy is very good as it portrays a positive image to those shopping in its stores (summers, 1998). Carphone partners with many well performing companies together with which they do business. By using this strategy they enhance their market position and this puts them ahead of the game. Recently it announced a possible partnership with Samsung which will see up to 60 standalone stores open across Europe. The company is well endowed with technology and many of their staffs are well equipped with the latest technology. According to the latest statistics from the stores, they have rolled out over 5000 tablets to members of their staff across all stores which is now seen as the single biggest digital workforce. The CEO of the company said in one of the tabloids that they put technology at the heart of what they do, and so practice what they preach. Carphone warehouse needs to undertake several measures to improve their business. To get at the top does not require much effort than to remain there. This company should evaluate their pricing; this should be done first by evaluating what the customer think about their prices. They should come up with prices that are not way too high out of business neither too low to bring a burden of cash flow shortage (Greasley, 1999). They should also have prices and commodities for all classes of people, both high end customers and the common shoppers. This will help bring up the profitability of the company. Carphone warehouse needs to improve on their weak spots.   There were criticism and accusation that they were slamming to win new customers, customers alleged that when they bought phones on this store their landlines accounts were subsequently switched off without their consent, a scenario like this will portray bad picture on this company. The company needs to improve their corporate image by coming with better ways of public image (Greasley, 1999). The company should also explore new markets by improving their marketing. Venturing into new demographic areas will help the company to increase its clientele which in the long run will boost sales. Carphone should spread their wings even in Eastern Europe or even in other continents. Involvement of employees in the business is vital for the growth. Although carphone has improved in this aspect by digitalizing their staff, employees should be motivated to be brand ambassadors of the company. Being up to date with the current trends in the technology will also help the company to compete actively and increase their sales. References Greasley, A. (1999). Operations management in business. Reaction Paper on the 11th Hour

The film documentary was most likely called the 11th hour to give emphasis to what would become of humanity in the near future. The latest possible moment – we all must work hand-in-hand to make this a favorable possibility for everyone. It is a challenge we would all face today, but in due time we may reap a great harvest for our fellow people if we persevere. In the field of business, the role of this documentary is to give those in the corporate sector as well as those who own small enterprises an in depth look to why corporate social responsibility is important. They are given the opportunity to look back at the past, present and strive for a future that can still be altered. As the film progresses, the issues on global warming, extinction of species, deforestation as well as the slowly disappearing ocean habitats is depicted giving the viewer the chance to think about what he/she ought to do now. These concerns are actually our country’s own, too. Deforestation as a result of illegal logging had played its part in making matters worse for the past few years – floods had devastated lives, no trees to stop it in its tracks. The drought the country is experiencing – a sign of global warming. Polluted bodies of water had driven out the freshness of the fish as well as other aquatic creatures. Even though it has its share of endangered species, the Philippines however, does not have concerns on the extinction of any at the moment. This is most likely because of many other things the government is busy with. But no matter how we look at it, what is happening to the ecosystem around the world is a large outcry to the acts of the past recurring now.

How to Write a Strong Recommendation Letter for Your Students Scholarship

How to Write a Strong Recommendation Letter for Your Student's Scholarship SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips There are numerous scholarships out there for students entering college, and each has its own special set of guidelines. A recommendation letter for scholarship from teachers, counselors, and other important people in a student's life can serve as powerful testaments to a student's past and future achievements. As an English teacher and college counselor, I put a lot of time into crafting personalized letters of recommendation for students applying to scholarships. In this article, I discuss what exactly should go into an effective scholarship recommendation letter, along with the importance of tailoring your letter to the scholarship at hand. So how exactly should recommenders frame their letters to best help their students win a scholarship? And what purpose do reference letters serve as scholarship committees sift through applications? // Purpose of Recommendation Letters in Scholarship Applications A letter of recommendation for scholarship can accomplish a number of things within a student's scholarship application. First, they can act as strong endorsements of a student, praising her academic and personal qualities and expressing confidence in her future success. The best letters allow a student to transcend her resume and come alive, so to speak, as a multi-dimensional person to a scholarship committee. They also show that she has people in her life motivated to speak on her behalf. While illuminating a student's impressive qualities (her compassion, energy, or leadership skills, for instance), a recommendation letter provides further evidence that the student is qualified to receive the scholarship. Most scholarships are awarded for students with specific commitments or goals. They might be awarded to students pursuing engineering, math, science, computer science, or literary studies. Recommendations should be customized to each scholarship. They can attest that a student is both eligible for and deserves the scholarship based on her merit and/or need. For those scholarships geared toward students that have financial need, a recommendation letter may discuss a student's ability to succeed despite limited resources. A recommendation letter for scholarship can complement and add to the story a student tells in her application about who she is and why she deserves it. In order to do this successfully and accurately, you, as the recommender, should first gather essential information and brainstorm ideas before beginning to write. Before Writing YourScholarship Recommendation Letter... Since letters of recommendation carry such weight, first you should ask yourself if you can write a genuine and meaningful letter of support for the student. If you feel you don't know her well or have little to share on her behalf, then your letter could come off as lukewarm or uninformed, both of which would add little, or could even hurt, her chances. Assuming you're motivated to recommend the student, you should make sure to find out exactly what the scholarship is for. Is it looking to award students who have overcome significant challenges? Is it helping girls who want to study computer science? Minority students entering technology fields? High academic achievers that contribute to their communities? By being aware of the guidelines and expectations of the scholarship, you can make sure to validate your student's qualifications to receive it. If it's a scholarship for future engineers, talk about your student's fascination with physics. If it has to do with community involvement, talk about her volunteer work at the Boys and Girls Club. Your recommendee should provide you with information about the scholarship, along with her resume, "brag sheet," and any other relevant information. If you still have unanswered questions, it could help your letter writing to sit down with the student and talk about her high school experiences and post-secondary goals. Once you have a clear sense of the scholarship and themes within the student's application, you can think about the story you want to tell in your recommendation letter for scholarship. Think about the student's outstanding strengths, along with significant experiences that have shaped her or obstacles she's overcome. // Finally, consider what anecdotes or observations you can share to demonstrate those strengths. If she's applying to a computer science scholarship, you can highlight her year-long project designing an app to track water use and promote conservation. If she's applying for a literary scholarship, talk about her publications in the town's local magazine. All of these components are important to include in the scholarship recommendation letter. Read on to learn more about key content in recommendation letters for scholarships. Include meaningful stories to support your recommendation. WhatAre the Main Parts of a Recommendation Letter? Each recommendation letter you write will be personalized to the specific student you're writing about, but many of these letters follow a similar template. Here's everything that you should include in your recommendation letter: A salutation An introduction that explains your relationship to the student The body of the letter where you explain the reason(s) for why you believe the student deserves the scholarship A summary where you reiterate your main points Your contact information and signature What to Include in Your Recommendation Letter Once you've brainstormed a list of the student's strengths, meaningful anecdotes, and qualifications to win the scholarship, you can start to draft your letter. Introduction As with recommendations for college, you should begin by stating who you're recommending, how you know her and in what contexts, and what makes you qualified to give your assessment. If you've known the student in different contexts, like as both her teacher and club advisor or coach, then you should say so. This further shows that you know her well and have seen how she interacts and performs in different roles and environments. It's my great pleasure to recommend Janet for the X Scholarship, who I got to know as her 11th grade AP Calculus teacher. Throughout the three years I've known Brian as his baseball coach and 11th grade English teacher, he's impressed me with his intense focus and commitment. // Body of the Letter: Why the Student Deserves the Scholarship Once your introduction incorporates these elements - a strong statement of support and an explanation of who you are and how you know the student - then you can move into your assessment. You should highlight the student's primary strengths, again, making sure to tailor your evaluation to the specific scholarship. If the scholarship is focusing on academic achievement, then a statement of high ranking from an established teacher could go a long way. Stating that the student is one of the top three you've taught in twenty years or the best student in her class suggests that she's an outstanding applicant who will likely continue to excel in college. Since most scholarships are awarded for students going into certain fields, you should speak about your vision of the student at college. If the scholarship is awarded to someone going into mechanical engineering, then you can corroborate the student's academic and professional goals and paint a picture of what you see her accomplishing in the field. Talk about her aptitude for the subject, involvement in Robotics Club, and excitement to study with renowned engineer Professor Smith at college. Ultimately, you want to make the student stand out as a motivated individual that the scholarship donors would want to invest in. You may emphasize her unique commitment, talent, drive, and passion, and show them how her contributions in high school predict her continued pursuits in college. Show them that she deserves the scholarship and that you have no doubt she will put it to good use. Your Contact Information In the end of your letter, you can give your contact information and invite the scholarship committee to get in touch with any further questions. If you've provided a complete, glowing picture of the student, then they should have all the information they need. On the other hand, your letter may fall short if it includes some of the following elements. Neither your coffee nor your recommendation letter should be lukewarm. What Not to Include in Your Scholarship Recommendation Letter It's unlikely that any recommendation letter will be explicitly bad. If you didn't get along with a student for some reason, then presumably she wouldn't ask you to recommend her. Even if she mysteriously did, you'd most likely decline or suggest someone who would be a better choice for recommender. However, recommendation letters can still end up being mediocre and not very helpful compared to others that rave about a student. Lukewarm Praise Letters that come off as lukewarm stand in stark contrast to enthusiastic ones. To avoid this, make sure to be intentional with your word choice and to avoid cliches. Talking about how a student is hard-working and a good student might not stack up well beside descriptors like diligent, insightful, intellectually curious, or compassionate, to name a few. Try not to use vague or overused adjectives that sound generic and lack impact. Additionally, a mediocre ranking like "above average" doesn't do much to help a student, especially if the scholarship is looking for exceptional academic merit. You also want to avoid covering every grade, club, or activity associated with the student, as this lacks focus. It wouldn't zero in on the specific qualifications the scholarship committee is looking for, and thus wouldn't help prove that the student deserves their time and money. Non-Descriptive Reasons Why the Student Deserves the Scholarship You also want to avoid simply listing adjectives in your recommendation without having the stories to back them up. Just as a picture is worth a thousand words, a story about your student is more memorable and telling than using an adjective with no example. In addition to calling Roger a caring, sensitive, and proactive leader, talk about how he developed a week of programming at school to raise awareness of mental health issues. Simply put, avoid abstract language if you can't support it with real examples. Generic Writing Finally, to reiterate the point, the least effective recommendation letter is one not tailored to the scholarship itself. While you may use the same letter of recommendation for more than one college a student is applying to, you should make sure to customize your letter for scholarships. They tend to be both competitive and specific. Therefore a student needs a strong, customized letter that talks about why she's the perfect person to win that money. Sample Recommendation Letter for a Scholarship Now that you know all the partsyour letter should include, here's an sample scholarship recommendation letter so you can see how it looks all tied together. Notice how, in this letter, the writer clearly explains how he knows the student, gives specific examples of why the student is exceptional, discusses how the scholarship would benefit the student, and overall presents a strong and passionate case as to why this student deserves the scholarship. Dear Scholarship Selection Committee, I'm thrilled torecommend Nathan Daniels for the Aspiring Entrepreneur Scholarship. I taught Nathan's Introductory Economics and AP Macroeconomics classes, and I also am the advisor for the high school Business Club, which Nathan is Vice President of. I've known Nathan for three years, and I've seen him use intelligence, business savvy, hard work, and people skills to accomplish more than almost any high school student I know.I highly recommend him for this scholarship. I first met Nathan when he was a sophomore in my Introductory Economics class. Right away he stood out by being able to quickly grasp economic concepts and engage in thoughtful discussion. He's very skilled at being able to apply even abstract business and economics concepts to real world examples and understand how they impact everyday life. In both classes I have taught him in, Nathan has been an active participant and one of the highest-scoring students in the class, but he always takes time to help his classmates. By the time he was in my AP Economics class, I could put him in a group with students struggling to understand certain concepts and trust him to competently answer any questions they had while I was working with other groups. Despite being an excellent student and considerate peer, Nathan's most impressive achievement is the business he started on his own and continues to run. At the end of his sophomore year, Nathan came to me with a business plan he had for a tutoring business he wanted to run. It was extremely detailed, well thought-out, and based on solid business principles, so I recommended giving it a shot. I've seen numerous students come up with great ideas but not follow through, so I didn't expect much of it. However, Nathan not only got his business up and running, he has managed to keep it going and even expand it so that he now has three tutors working under him. He has shown incredible drive and business skills, and I truly believe this is only the beginning for him. Nathan has discussed with me how he would use this scholarship to help expand his current tutoring business as well as begin a new business to help college students resell their textbooks. I've looked over the plan for this new business, and it appears as well planned as his first. I have no doubt Nathan has both the motivation and the business sense to continue growing as an entrepreneur. I believe Nathan would be an extremely deserving recipient of this award and that you can be certain he'd make the most of it, the way he has made the most of all opportunities he has had. Research paper on animal cruelty Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Research paper on animal cruelty - Essay Example Gianotto is revealing how widespread animal cruelty is, costing the lives of hundreds of animals a day, and thousands a year. Unfortunately, there are many people that attempt to condone their actions when they abuse animals, but when it comes to animals, they should be treated no different than human beings. Though there are many causes to animal cruelty, the greatest reason that abuse occurs is because there are many people that regard animals as being less than worthy of proper care and support. It is believed that animals cannot think, feel, or respond as humans are able to, and should therefore not be treated with respect. There are other people that think that animals exist solely to help humans obtain certain needs, such as food or clothing. They are materials and resources, but nothing more than that. Though they may not be able to speak and tell us how they feel or what they are experiencing, if an animal is wrongfully treated, it is still affected by it. It hurts and it suf fers from our negligent actions. Animals are living, breathing creatures, just like human beings, and they are capable of responding in similar ways to pain and neglect. They also have their own needs that need to be met to ensure their survival. To say that they are unlike human beings and are below us is completely inaccurate. As aforementioned, there are a variety of ways in which an animal can experience animal cruelty, which can be divided up into two categories: neglect and abuse. One of the most common forms of animal cruelty, especially in residential situations, is neglect. When an animal, usually a pet, is neglected, the owners are not doing their part in making sure that their pet is getting the necessities, such as food, water, and a proper environment to protect them from the various weather elements. If it is over one hundred degrees outside, the owner should accommodate so that their pet does not die from the heat. If a pet does die from conditions such as these, the owner has committed animal cruelty. Keeping a pet becomes a chore to these people, and many even regard pets as just that. However, it should be the other way around. If a family brings in a pet, they are bringing it in as a new family member, and that pet should be treated as such. Animal abuse consists of many things, ranging from physically abusing an animal, much as a person would physically abuse a child, to housing dogs in puppy mills. Physically abusing an animal involves beating them, kicking or hitting them, with such unnecessary force that the animal becomes injured. Puppy mills are â€Å"commercial dog breeding facilities that are [...] often in substandard conditions regarding the wellbeing of dogs in their care (Swartz).† In a puppy mill, dogs are kept in close quarters, which are often tiny cages with hardly space to move. They are not let out, but are left to live in their own filth and without the proper food, water, and attention that they need. To these peop le, animals are simply objects or else nuisances, even though the person has the choice of whether or not they keep that animal. Instead, when they bring home an animal that they no longer love, they stop caring for it and making sure that its needs are met. The fault is that of the owner, but it is the animal that gets the consequences. Other forms of animal cruelty under the category of abuse includes, though is by no means
